weight in my bag( most of it food) to get my pack weight down to 42
pounds. Had a big hostel breakfast of chocolate chip pancakes and
grits, then got into a shuttle and got dropped off at Woody Gap with
Tenderfoot and a lawyer from Atlanta we are calling Counselor, much to
his chagrin. It was a beautiful day, and we cranked out the first 7
miles in 2.5 hours to get to the base of Blood Mountain. Ate salami
and pitA for lunch, and then headed up. Tough climb through snow, but
beautiful view from the top. After a steel 2 mile descent, we arrived
at Neel's Gap Mountain Crossing, the only building the trail goes
through. At the top of Blood, a man told me that a skinny boy like me
can't eat enough food when thru-hiking, and I took that to heart. I
downed 2 cokes, a powerade, two ice cream sanwiches, and a tombstone
supreme pizza upon arrival. We booked bottom bunks at the hostel
there, and then thought about what we would for the rest of the night.
After asking around, I found an old long bearded local to go into town
to get beer. In the meantime, a trail legend named Baltimore Jack, who
has done 24,000 miles, offered up some PBR tallboys. Later, watched a
movie that Jester, owner of an outfitter in Harper's Ferry, made about
the Pacific Crest Trail. The hostel was full of characters. Did not
sleep well, the fire alarm went off twice due to steam in the
bathroom. Woke up today to 3 inches of snow, and it is still snowing.
Tenderfoot, Counselor and myself moved down the road about a mile to
cabins which are only 20 dollars a night, or 2.50 more than the
hostel. Watching Sportscenter now, hopefully the snow will stop...
Either way, will be heading out tomorrow to do the 11 miles to Low
Gap. Hej-hej.

This is great! I love the photos and impressive amount of food you're putting away. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteThose are some great photos you've posted. I'm jealous right now sitting behind my desk in a cube crunching numbers.
ReplyDeleteLang, what's your trail name??? I'm dying to know!
ReplyDeleteHow about "Stoned"
ReplyDeleteKeep trucking Lang!
Annie, I met a guy that saw Bart and I hiking on the first day. He asked me what happened, I told the story, and he dubbed me Bart-less at the Hiker Hostel.
