Hello, this will be short because I am beat. Tough weather conditions.
Left Winding Stair Gap at 9:00, got up Siler Bald quickly, and then
the shit hit the fan. The snow drifts were 3 feet deep and just melted
enough that every three or four steps your leg would sink down to the
knee - really frustrating, I threw every swear word I knew at the
mountain. Only made it 11 miles. Got up early today and onthe trail by
8. First few miles were okay, then we got up in altitude and the rain
started and didn't stop till 1:30. My damn rain pants wouldn't stay up
because modern pants manufacturers assume that if you are tall you
also must be fat. Had a steep six mile hike down at the end of the day
to finish of a tough 17 mile day. Rolled into Natahala Outdoor Center
at 3. Got a bunk, six pack, and a hamburger. The one bright spot in
the day was a great care package I got from Hunter with fig newtons
and granola. Hitting the hay, got a huge climb tomorrow. More rain
coming, the Smokies loom...
